Top Ten Greatest Movies (the comeback)

It's been a while since my last post july of 2007. uhm, quite ages ago. nevertheless, i'm glad to be back, to share my views, to enlighten some, to distract the majority.lol. I have not told most of you that i am a couch potato and a movie buff at the same time. you can put me in a room full of plasma tvs all year long. man, that's a pure joy. let me tour you to my top ten favorite movies of all time:

at no. 10, we have the box office giant SPIDERMAN 3. this was the first and last movie that i saw and will see on imax. the story of this third installment is far off better than the melodramatic sequel. this series shows how the goody-two-shoes Peter Parker transformed into someone ferrocious, arrogant/proud and on top of it all, oozing with sex appeal. yep, i am talking about the black spiderman. basically, parker, in this movie, has fought alot of battles--spiderman vs the villain, spiderman vs harry (his bestfriend who turned against him upon the discovery that spiderman was indeed liable for his father's death), spiderman vs mary jane and red spiderman vs black spiderman. great visuals, dragging musical score and sound, and heart pounding fight sequences--some things to look forward to.

coming in at no.9 is the first installment on the spiderman trilogy, SPIDERMAN 1. the first play date of this movie fell on my birthday back in 2004. though it was storming outside, i pleaded for my mom to allow me to see this movie. it was really worth the hassle. this movie shows that somehow there is a peter parker in all of us--someone who is taunted or teased for their imperfections. at a certain extent, i could relate to the character being a geek and quite a loser when i was on my high school. what made this movie quite special is that it would exceed expectations.

at no 8, the tear-jerker ONE MORE CHANCE. many would rant at me for being jologs for actually picking a tagalog flick. for all the racists out there, you should give this movie a chance or have it on your watch list this weekend. i have gone through a second attempt on having a relationship with someone but unlike the movie, it did not last. the cause of the break-up of Basha and Popoy is deep. it does not dwell on third party or parents not liking either party. the turning point of the relationship is too personal and mature. i have never seen a break-up movie as deep and realistic as presented in one more chance. you need to watch the movie if you want to know what it is. of course, i cannot discount the lines that would really leave a mark; most of them are in english but delivered naturally by the actors.

YOU ARE THE ONE scored the seventh spot. i like this movie for some selfish reasons. i really like and love toni g; and, sam and toni's chemistry brings that kilig factor. toni g has a good comic timing. she has this brand of comedy that does not make her ugly unlike others. it lies on her delivery. viewers can expect a predictably good plot of prince charming meets a not-so-fitting-to-be-a-princess lady. it works because most filipina wants to experience the same love story.

at no.6 LAKEHOUSE, this movie is an adaptation of a korean script. for those who do appreciate love story combined with some divine intervention, this bullock-reeves flick is a sure treat. a lakehouse binds two people belonging to different time periods--one belonging to the past (a year ago) and the other at the present. or from my sister's point of view, one belonging to the present and the other from the future. whatever it is, it pretty means the same thing. the ending is quite magical. it is not a hardcore tearjerker but it will touch your heart for sure.
since we are becoming cheesier and cheesier, let me take you to the cheesiest movie of all time--

A WALK TO REMEMBER. who would not forget the jamie sullivan and landon carter journey towards love defying both norms and fate. two people who come from extremely opposite cliques in school are brought together via a spring musical. a touching tale on the power of a person to put a direction to someone's messed up life. i can still recall a line that i really gave in when it comes to the crying part: " i am not scared of death. i am scared not to be with you." and the line that gives meaning to the movie: "jamie has faith in me."

i think the last three movies are quite on the dramedy side. well, i know how to have fun. at no.4 the star studded comedic riot, THE FAMILY STONE, comes in. what i love about the brand of comedy is that it is sharp, intelligent and funny all at the same time. it is not slapstick. it does not try to be funny.

a may-december love affair checks in at the third spot, PRIME. what made the movie works aside from hot love scenes is the fact that Uma Thurman's therapist is the jewish mother of the young guy she is hooking up with. the challenge for Meryl Streep is to seperate the professional from the personal. it all gets messed up when the whole brouhaha is revealed right into their faces. it really gets funny how streep acts uncomfortably when thurman details their lovemaking. i could not imagine my girlfriend actually telling my mom how we did the deed in details.

this is my current favorite and it deserves the second spot, A VERY SPECIAL LOVE. i was actually convinced to watch this movie upon seeing the trailer. i was expecting to be disappointed. but it turned out, i really love it. it was so young and fresh. the love story did not try to be mature which really works. with so much schoolworks and problems in our country, it is just fitting to see a movie which will make you remember your puppy love. it also has a deep sense on it considering the conflict of Miggy with his family being an unwanted child of a different woman. laida has really an almost perfect comic timing. the ending will really put a smile on your face.

Topping my list is the movie that i've seen for almost 30 times, JUST LIKE HEAVEN. of all witherspoon movies, this is definitely her greatest. it tells a story of a soul separated from her body via a severe comatose and her journey back to her body through the help of his soul mate who rented her apartment. i might spill everything. this is definitely a must-see.
my next post is about sports!(trying to be well rounded)

The Couch Potato

Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix

This is the fifth installment of the Harry Potter series that made it to the big screen. It details Harry’s fifth year in Hogwarts and the efforts of the Ministry of Magic to take over Hogwarts while Voldemort connives to acquire a “weapon.” Unlike other installments, this entails a twisted plot equipped with major surprises—the death of a character, a court trial, overthrowing of a known power, the rise of the Dark Lord, and to top it all, Harry’s first major kiss. A turning point in the HP series, this is considered as Rowling’s finest work in terms of plot. Fans and foes alike are taken in another enchanting ride that is the Harry Potter trademark.

Transformers

Taken from the ever-famed 1980’s cartoon series, this much-awaited silver screen debut promises a full blast war between the two races of robotic aliens—the Decepticons and Autobots in search of a life-sustaining/ life-taking agent, the “All Spark,” which was accidentally embedded in the realms of Earth. Young Sam Witwicky holds the clue to this quest and finds himself torn between these two groups of intruders. With the world at stake, Sam comes to realize his family’s motto---“No sacrifice, no victory.”

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

A sequel to the 2005 blockbuster hit, the world’s famous astronauts-turned-superheroes are back for another action packed adventure with the rise of a new villain—Silver Surfer and the breaking out of Victor Von Doom from his icy prison. The movie glistens in a romantic spark as Sue Storm a.k.a. Invisible Girl and Reed Richards a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic tie the knot in superhero fashion. This effects-heavy movie takes the viewers in a classic good versus evil battle.

Ratatouille

Remy is an aspiring French chef. His passion for cooking is incontestable but his biological condition is a pressing problem. How can a rat be the next best chef in a rodent-phobic market? This is an exciting rat race that rattled the culinary world of Paris. A feel good movie that truly satisfies that fondness for animated flicks; and a moving tale on how a rat faces the adversities in pursuit of his big dreams.

The Bookworm

For One More Day
Mitch Albom

Flowing with sentiments toward a death of someone, For One More Day recounts the journey of a son who gets to spend one more day with her mother who died eight years earlier. Readers are taken in a patented Albom attack on tackling life and death. The plot deals with self-redemption and the lead character’s struggles to overcome his ghosts.

A Bend in the Road
Nicholas Sparks

A deviation from Sparks’ conservative romantic tongue, A Bend in the Road is an intriguing take on a romance clouded with deceptions, remnants of the past and tragedy. Readers are bound to have an intense shift in emotional gear—love, sadness, anger and frustration. The approach in writing challenges the readers to solve the mystery because the love affair of the two lead characters is haunted by a devastating secret. Whether you solve the puzzle or not, the climax is still a sure surprise. A valiant effort from Sparks.

Everything’s Eventual
Stephen King

This is the first collection of stories from the master of horror, Stephen King, since Nightmares and Dreamscapes. Everything’s Eventual is comprised of 14 short stories dug up from King’s genius. Every story generates the ultimate chill expected from King. The book includes an O. Henry Prize winner, two other award winners, four previously published by The New Yorker and Riding the Bullet, King’s original e-book which attracted over half a million online readers and became the most famous short story of the decade. Released in 2002, this is another milestone to King’s brilliant career as a writer.

Witch of Portobello
Paulo Coelho

From the author of Veronika Decides to Die and The Alchemist, Coelho comes up with another riveting novel set in London. This is a story of a woman tagged as the Witch of Portobello for her apparent powers of prophecy. Her life is pieced together by a series of recorded interviews from people who touched her life. The story unravels her mysterious beginning to her abrupt departure. Meticulously written so as to invoke questions and centers on the idea of solving the mysteries of the lead character’s identity by the people around her.

The Disc Jockey

It won’t be Soon before Long
Maroon 5

The band’s sophomore outing is a cool blend of electro-funk and blue-eyed soul that exudes a striking confidence. Fresh from the success of their bitter debut, Songs about Jane, their recent effort has a more defined and sleek sound attesting to their status as America’s frontrunner in the pop band scene. The sound in general is a fusion of their musical influences ranging from the sweet style of Sting to funky new wave rock.

The Dutchess
Fergie

Step into the eclectic beat of the dutchess (intentionally misspelled to show Fergie’s command over her music). This is a mix of throwback hip hop and soul, reggae, ska-punk, scat, and midtempo fluff produced by her colleague, Will.I.am. This is her debut as a solo artist after sticking with the successful hip hop group, Black Eyed Pea. In terms of quality, the tracks depict Fergie as an itching solo artist who wants to do away with the BEP’s image.

Once Again
John Legend

The record is definitely made from the pure heart and soul of one of the greatest songwriters in the current music scene. If other artists are claiming that their sound is soulful, they should listen first to this album. The label features a brand of soul music that is in its purest and undiluted form. Legend’s breathtaking vocals, a sound that is uncluttered with simple and intelligent lyrics constitute Once Again. The carrier single, Save Room, is a little bit poppy contrary to the subdued sound of other Legend’s work. This only proves the versatility that lies in his musical genius.

The Sweet Escape
Gwen Stefani

Talk about reinvention, Gwen Stefani is one of the few artists that can shift their image and sound to another direction whenever they come up with a new album. The Sweet Escape delivers a based-heavy hip hop with pop lyrics and retro-flavored anthems. To date, it is Stefani’s most adventurous and ambitious work. Unique and new beats which are far more different from Stefani’s previous output are introduced in the record. Stefani takes the softer track with her own definition of ballads which can be compared to the iconic beginnings of Madonna.

.okay naman kami, mahal ko siya, mahal niya rin ako. nagaaway kami dahil minsan hindi ako nakakapagtext at vice versa, we try to understand each other as much as we can, we always give each other the benefit of the doubt, and we always stick together kahit away mode kami which I find really mature in a progressive relationship. and besides, may something na nangyari na lalong nagpatibay ng relationship namen pwede na kong kumanta ng,"Ale, nasa langit na ba ako?"

Topsy-Turvy Mind

hai, this could be it. sobrang nahihirapan ako sa strength of materials ko kasi i didn't take my mechanics that serious. God, i should have known better. now, i have to work doubly hard just to make it good sa exams. kanina when we were discussing, it's as if i'm staring at point blank to think na I am a soon to be civil engineer. am i in the wrong path or talagang bothered lang ako sa nangyayari sa lovelife ko? alam kong maraming may malaking problema kaysa sa akin. Ok maraming magcocoment futile na naman yung arguments ko.
kasi may gumugulo sa akin ngayon, a friend of mine. we're having extra-sweet talks, sharing the same sense of humor and even thots, a very good friend to say the least. I'm afraid that I might get too friendly and baka maglead into something na hindi tama as of now because i'm obviously committed. "Bukas na lang kita mamahalin" ang theme song na tumatakbo sa mind ko. Bakit ba kasi ganito masaya naman kami tapos may nanggugulo? hmmp, anyways, lagi kasi kaming magkaaway and that friend of mine ang takbuhan ko. Sobrang sweet niya talaga. ang tanging gusto niya is to make me happy, to cheer me up in spite and despite of.
Ito ang Top Five Things na Gumugulo sa Isip ko Ngayon
1. Ang lesson ko sa Strength of Materials
2. Ang Articles ko sa builder na isang headline, features article, regular news and sports news
3. Ang Constraint need ko na mag-billiards
4. Ang pressure na maging scholar for the next term
5. Higit sa lahat, ang twisted lovelife ko

Overjoyed

I want to thank all the CE people who helped me sa exams whenever nagtutumbling na ako hindi ko pa makuha yung logic ng problem. Since, I helped them naman sa ibang subjects, kaya quits lang kami. Disclaimer: I'm not a parasite, hindi lahat ng quizzes ko kopya. Siguro mga one out of five yung hindi ko nasasagutan, yung talagang super hirap kaya I sought for their help. nagbibigay rin naman ako ng sagot pag ako yung nakagets ng problem. Well, i'm too defensive kasi baka isipin ng ibang tao na I don't deserve all of this good fortune. I worked hard for it, mind you. Moving along, i'm about to take my exit exams sa physics an hour from now. Wish me luck. sa dami ba naman ng formulas at concepts na aaralin mo, nakakawindang talaga. From kinematics to relativity, lahat aaralin mo. Bakit ba kasi naimbento ang physics? On a positive note, okay naman kasi i see naman yung significant ng subject na ito sa everyday life. pero, the department is making it hard for us. sige, need to study more because i'm not a parasite. ^--^
